THERAPY FOR MASCULINITY

Embracing vulnerability and opening up is not a weakness but an act of courage.

Although we all experience hardship in our lives, men tend to be less likely to seek help. Societal demands and cultural norms have forced men to be so disconnected from their thoughts and feelings that discussing or recognizing them may be too difficult. They may have learned from their parents, family, and friends that being vulnerable is a weakness. So they grew up suppressing their emotions, unaware of what they mean, and unable to share them. But as a man, even when you know you are suffering, the masculinity standards ingrained since childhood may prevent you from asking for a hand. You may think you need to “man up,” “shake it off,” and brave the storm. You may also add pressure to your already stressful days to “get a grip” so you can continue to work, provide for your family, and achieve success.

The stigma around men and mental health perpetuates shame and prevents many from getting the help they deserve. Some men are quietly hurting without knowing that their pain is a shared experience. You are not suffering alone. And you do not need to keep bottling things up or forcing yourself to tough it out.

Embracing vulnerability and opening up is not a weakness but an act of courage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Therapy FOR MEN?

Therapy (also known as counseling) refers to a form of treatment that addresses mental health challenges.  Therapy is also an effective avenue to get to know yourself and grow.

You will meet with a licensed therapist to discuss your concerns and learn healthy and practical coping strategies.

Therapy for men focuses on treating men and supporting them to navigate their issues. Since men are less likely to ask for help, recognizing the signs of psychological struggle is crucial to begin treatment.  Therapy for men isn’t just for cisgender males—it is for anyone with masculine identities.

How Can Therapy Help Men?

When left untreated, mental health problems can affect your family, your work, your relationships, and life as you know it.  They may also get worse over time or turn into other severe health conditions.

Therapy provides a private space to drop your shield and speak about your pain.  Although you may feel uncomfortable talking to a stranger, your therapist is licensed and trained to listen without judging you or forcing you to act a certain way.  The focus is entirely on you and making your life better.

Therapy also offers the opportunity to explore where these thoughts and feelings may be stemming from.  You will establish connections and notice patterns that will give you an insight into yourself and your purpose.  Therapy can be your chance to make discoveries about your life and find clarity about the path ahead.

But therapy is more than “talk.”  Therapy will help you take actionable steps and hone your skills to handle difficulties on your own.  The idea is to empower you with tools to be a better parent, son, partner, colleague, and well-rounded human being.  You can learn to live well and overcome life’s challenges.

And you don’t have to do it alone.

IS IT TIME TO TRY THERAPY?

Many men suffer from depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and other mental health issues. Yet, some may miss the signs, ignore them, or attempt to cope with unhealthy and ineffective strategies.

Men and women may suffer from the same problems but exhibit different symptoms.  For example, depression may show up as fatigue, anger, or mood changes in men, but as sadness or worthlessness in women.

Some men also experience physical symptoms such as a racing heartbeat or ongoing aches, which may motivate them to call their doctor more than emotional signs.

If you are struggling with these symptoms or have noticed them in your loved one, do not wait any longer.  Therapy can help you feel better and get back to doing what you love.

COMMON WARNING SIGNS IN MEN THAT NEED THERAPY INCLUDE:
