Janie Glassmith, LMFT, Founder (she/her)

BIO:

I’m Janie, she/her, LFMT (CA 93106, NY 002018-01, TX 204374, WA LF61192973), the Founder and Executive Director of Spaces Therapy and therapist.

I am a relational therapist who does depth-oriented, attachment (theory)-based therapy where we spend time looking at what is happening for you today while also exploring your history to see how it connects to current struggles. I’m often described as gentle and collaborative and I find that these qualities mixed with humor are what help my clients feel comfortable and confident making the changes they need to move forward in creating the life they want.

Guiding Principles:

My guiding principle in therapy is authenticity. I believe genuine human connection is the bedrock of healing. In the therapy room, I strive to be myself, fostering a space where you can also be your true self. This authenticity extends to my therapeutic practice. I am deeply rooted in the theories and causes that resonate with me, rather than chasing popular psychology trends. For example, my enduring passion for Attachment Theory, ignited in 2012, remains an anchor in my work, providing a stable foundation even as I integrate new techniques and perspectives. Authentic connection also demands continuous learning. I am dedicated to expanding my understanding of diverse experiences – gender, race, socioeconomic background, and beyond – through ongoing study and reflection. This commitment ensures that I can offer a deeper, more empathetic connection to every individual who shares their journey with me. My goal is to create a therapeutic experience that is both grounded and expansive, reflecting the richness of human experience and fostering genuine connection.

My Style of Therapy:

Warm
I follow the statistic that says that the most important marker for change in therapy is the client’s (your) relationship with their therapist. So, your genuine connection to me matters. I do not hold back on showing my clients that I like them, care for them, and am with them in their work to be healthier. You will feel my warmth and support throughout our work together.

Collaborative
You are the expert on your story, I bring my expertise in the field of psychology and attachment theory. We explore what aspects of your life are weighing you down and make plans together on how to help lighten those weights over time, checking in along the way to make sure that we are on the same page and that you are getting what you need. I never assume that my interpretations are spot-on.  Checking in with you as I notice an important part of your story or a repeating experience allows us to consider if you are seeing the same thing too and explore where you have choices to form your future experience.

Direct
When I see a pattern playing out, I will communicate that to you. The clients who are  drawn to work with me often aren’t looking for a therapist that sits back and just listens–I communicate what I notice, clarify pieces of your story that can help us understand you better, and provide resources or information when it is helpful or relevant. You do not have to wonder what is happening in my mind;  I will tell you and make sure it fits with your experience of yourself too.

I’m Particularly Good at Working With:

  • Individuals that hold the world together for others. ex: the breadwinner in a partnership that has not felt heard in their asks for help or a family member that has to downplay their needs or desires because others take up that space.

  • Couples that keep coming back to the same type of argument over and over (especially those that love each other but feel stuck).
