Course Description: This course will explore working with clients who are navigating becoming a mother. This developmental phase, also referred to as matrescence, is an epoch that involves major neurological, social, emotional, and cognitive change. These changes demand an increase in general support and warrant specific mental health considerations. This course will offer a detailed exploration of the biological transformation that occurs during this period as well as developmentally appropriate milestones and normative responses. We will discuss specific therapeutic interventions and strategies to support clients during this period as well as what factors put clients at risk for clinically significant struggle.
Instructor Information: Morgan Dixon is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (# 143871) in California. Morgan’s work as a therapist centralizes around motherhood and identity development. Morgan facilitates a monthly meetup wherein individuals experiencing motherhood gather to share highs and lows of the experience. Morgan also runs quarterly process groups for those wanting to further examine their identity after becoming a parent.
Educational Goals:
1) Develop a detailed understanding of the neurological and psychological changes an individual experiences throughout the experience of becoming a mother.
2) Acquire specific identity integration strategies for working with individuals navigating matrecense and motherhood.
3) Understand the distinction between developmentally appropriate mood responses and those warranting higher levels of care.
Measurable Learning Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to identify three key neurological and psychological changes.
2) Participants will be able to distinguish diagnostic criteria for peripartum mood disorders, as opposed to developmentally appropriate mood changes and response.
3) Participants will acquire four tools to suport clients navigating the transition into motherhood.

Who: Target Audience: LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCSs, Psychologists, Associates, Students, & Related Professionals, or any healing professional or community member interested in learning more about Maternal Mental Health This course would benefit anyone working with individuals, couples or families in this phase of life.

This comprehensive course delves into the unique challenges and opportunities presented during this developmental experience. Participants will learn about neurological and psychological changes, identity development, and peripartum mood disorders.
Where: This training will be held in-person and virtually! It will also be recorded so if you purchase a ticket and are unable to attend, you will be able to receive the recording at a later date. *please note that the recording will only be available for a limited amount of time after the training date
CEUs: This course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Those seeking CE credit must be in attendance for the entirety of the presentation and complete the course evaluation. Those that seek CEUs from watching the recording after will be sent specific instructions on how to receive the full amount of CEs provided.
