Understanding Eating Disorders: Foundations for Mental Health Providers

Course Description: This course provides an essential introduction to the understanding and treatment of eating disorders. Participants will explore the origins of eating disorders, gaining insight into the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that contribute to their development. The course will guide therapists in identifying how eating disorders manifest in clients and equip them with tools to assess severity and make informed decisions regarding appropriate levels of care, from outpatient treatment to more intensive interventions. This course is ideal for clinicians looking to expand their expertise and better serve this population. The training will emphasize early detection, multidisciplinary collaboration, and ethical considerations.

Instructor Information: Ludine is a licensed therapist in both California and Tennessee with over a decade of experience in supporting adults as they navigate complex relationships with food and their bodies. Ludine’s work focuses on the intersection of relational trauma, neurodivergence, culture and family dynamics, recognizing deeply rooted impacts of these factors on eating behaviors and one’s relationship to self. Drawing from a variety of therapeutic strategies, including trauma-informed care, culturally sensitive practices, and holistic approaches, Ludine is dedicated to helping individuals reclaim a healthy and compassionate relationship with themselves.

  • What: This training equips therapists with the knowledge of how eating disorders manifest in clients and equips them with tools to assess severity and make informed decisions regarding appropriate levels of care, from outpatient treatment to more intensive interventions.

    This is an important training for anyone that has ever or will ever speak with a client about their relationship with food and their body

    (read: everyone.)

  • Where: This training will be held in-person and virtually! It will also be recorded so if you purchase a ticket and are unable to attend, you will be able to receive the recording at a later date. *please note that the recording will only be available for a limited amount of time after the training date

  • CEUs: This course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFT’s, LCSW’s, LPCC’s and LEP’s as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Those seeking CE credit must be in attendance for the entirety of the presentation and complete the course evaluation. Those that seek CEUs from watching the recording after will be sent specific instructions on how to receive the full amount of CEs provided.

Educational Goals:  

  1. Instructor will assist participants in developing a more nuanced understanding of the origin of eating disorders and how they can present in clients’ daily experiences, relationships, and behaviors.

  2. Instructor will assist participants with increasing their competency and utilization of appropriate assessment tools to develop treatment planning and intervention skills.

  3. Instructor will guide participants in developing an understanding of how to assess for which level of care is most indicated and how to ethically refer clients to a higher level of care, while taking into account individualized factors.

Measurable Learning Objectives: 

  1. Participants will be able to identify at least three distinct presentations of disordered eating.

  2. Participants will be able to integrate one assessment tool to help them develop appropriate treatment interventions.

  3. Participants will be able to distinguish two specific interventions for treating disordered eating.
