Differentiation in Couples Therapy

Developing Values-Based Boundaries and Connections in Couple’s/Relationship/Family Therapy

Course Description: Often clients who come to therapy to address their relationship(s) are already quite entrenched in their systemic dynamics. Often waiting and hoping for their partner(s) to change, Clients become stuck while developing resentment and unhelpful communication systems. This course focuses on one of Bowen’s 8 key principles from Family Systems Theory – Differentiation of Self – and how it can be utilized to assist clients in developing practical skills for shifting the systems they exist in, as well as developing skills for adjusting to how they exist in the systems that they cannot shift.

This presentation also takes into account some important cultural considerations, in light of Bowen’s work being Euro-centric in nature, and therefore limited in its understanding of how our greater societal systems may influence one’s ability to access and maintain Differentiation of Self.

Educational Goals:

1) To develop practical skills for making systemic change within the lives of our clients, particularly couples/relationships/families, to assist with decreasing the transmission of generational trauma. While insight-oriented work can help develop an understanding of how intergenerational trauma was developed and is transmitted, this course aims to provide practical skills to assist clients with developing their differentiation with self; so that they can make more regulated and conscious choices as to how they want to interact with each other.

2) The course also focuses on helping clinicians understand how their own work towards differentiation will be important in ensuring their ability to maintain awareness of how their own intergenerational trauma and systemic factors impact how they show up in the therapy room and can support their clients towards their individual and collective growth.

3) This course aims to develop an understanding of how the origin of Systems Thinking is rooted in Eurocentric ideology, and how thinking beyond this framework is essential for providing ethically sound care for a range of clients

Measurable Learning Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to identify the 4 Indicators of Differentiation.

2) Participants will be able to utilize 3 key skills for developing Differentiation of Self.

3) Participants will be able to integrate 3 cultural considerations for expanding

treatment with a diverse population.
