Differentiation – From Bowen and Beyond:

Theories, Application, and Cultural Considerations

Spaces Therapy LA (Provider #1032777) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and LEPs. Spaces Therapy LA maintains responsibility for the program and all its content.

Course Description: This course focuses on one of Bowen’s 8 key principles from Family Systems Theory – Differentiation of Self – and how it can be utilized to assist clients in developing practical skills for shifting the systems they live in. While most of us are trained to work with couples and families, many of us are working with individuals and have less direct access to the greater family system impacting our clients. This presentation aims to utilize core components of Differentiation of Self to assist both individuals and couples/families with making proactive and tangible systemic change. It also takes into account some important cultural considerations, in light of Bowen’s work being Euro-centric in nature, and therefore limited in its understanding of how\our greater societal systems may influence one’s ability to access and maintain differentiation of self.

Instructor Information: Kelli Penner is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who is

licensed in both California and Texas. She is currently a clinical supervisor and the clinical director at Spaces Therapy LA, a group practice in Highland Park, CA. She is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.

Educational Goals:

1) To develop practical skills for making systemic change within the lives of our

clients, whether individuals or couples/families, to assist with decreasing the transmission of generational trauma. While insight-oriented work can help develop an understanding of how intergenerational trauma was developed and is transmitted, this course aims to provide practical skills to assist clients with developing their differentiation with self; so that they can make more regulated and conscious choices as to how they want to interact with others.

2) The course also focuses on helping clinicians understand how their own work towards differentiation will be important in ensuring their ability to maintain awareness of how their own intergenerational trauma and systemic factors impact how they show up in the therapy room and can support their clients towards their individual growth.

3) This course aims to develop an understanding of how the origin of Systems Thinking is rooted in Eurocentric ideology, and how thinking beyond this framework is essential for providing ethically sound care for a range of clients.

Measurable Learning Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to identify the four Indicators of Differentiation.

2) Participants will be able to utilize 3 key skills for developing Differentiation of Self.

3) Participants will be able to integrate three cultural considerations for

expanding treatment with a diverse population.
